He claimed his remarks were misrepresented and that he believed a phase-down and phase-out of fossil fuels was “inevitable and in fact essential”.ĭefending progress made at the summit, a Cop28 spokesperson pointed to the progress on the loss and damage fund, launching a $30bn private market climate vehicle, bringing 51 oil companies to agree decarbonisation targets and 119 countries to sign a pledge to triple renewable energy. Outcry from climate scientists followed and Al Jaber, who runs the UAE’s state-owned oil company, Adnoc, held an emergency press conference the following day in which he was forced to defend his views. Shock over comments from the Cop28 president, Sultan Al JaberĪ few days into the conference, in a story that made headlines around the world, the Guardian’s Damian Carrington and the Centre for Climate Reporting revealed that Sultan Al Jaber had said in a video call last month that there was “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels was needed to restrict global heating to 1.5C (2.7F). But in most cases, the nature and timing of the pledged money remains unclear as few countries have released further details. The funds should be new and additional to existing commitments, and come as grants not loans, say climate justice experts. Estimates for the annual cost of the damage have varied from $100bn-$580bn. The $700m (£557m) so far pledged by wealthy nations most responsible for the climate emergency covers less than 0.2% of what is needed every year. Vulnerable and poor countries, which did little to cause the climate crisis, want to hold the biggest fossil fuel polluting countries liable for the pain and suffering they are experiencing from climate breakdown.īut there is a huge caveat to the agreed deal, which already contained various compromises. Loss and damage refers to the destruction the climate crisis is already wreaking on lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. The Guardian’s Nina Lakhani reported that it was a “hard-won victory by developing countries that they hoped would signal a commitment by the developed, polluting nations to finally provide financial support for some of the destruction already under way”. In a historic move, a loss and damage fund was agreed at the opening plenary of the first day of the Cop28 summit – something the global south has been demanding for decades. Empiricists will typically reply that the process of abstraction embeds a loss of information: impressions are vivid, while ideas are faint memories of reflections. He may approach a grasp of it by being told of its resemblance to other tastes of which he already has the ideas in his memory, imprinted there by things he has taken into his mouth but this isn’t giving him that idea by a definition, but merely raising up in him other simple ideas that will still be very different from the true taste of pineapple."įor instance, consider the idea of a triangle. How can you explain the flavor of a pineapple to someone who has never tasted one? Here is what John Locke says about pineapples in his Essay: "If you doubt this, see whether you can, by words, give anyone who has never tasted pineapple an idea of the taste of that fruit. Consider pineapples, a favorite example among early modern writers. Indeed – Hume continues in Book II – "all our ideas or more feeble perceptions are copies of our impressions or more lively ones." Empiricists support their philosophy by describing situations in which a person’s lack of experience precludes her from full understanding. Here is how David Hume expressed this creed: "it must be some one impression that gives rise to every real idea" (A Treatise of Human Nature, Book I, Section IV, Ch. Empiricists Maintain That Experience Leads to UnderstandingĮmpiricists claim that all ideas that a mind can entertain have been formed through some experience or – to use a slightly more technical term – through some impression. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. I’m not an expert on the bible but the master teacher said, “ But it shall not be so among you. It’s also important to note that none of these leaders set out to “be first,” instead they set out to serve others. This is the most powerful “WHY” a person can have. That reaction naturally instilled their driving purpose. I don’t believe that any of these leaders were looking for their “WHY.” Instead, I believe that something happened in their lives that caused an emotional reaction. Sinek points out some great leadership success stories examples. That’s a result, and it will always be a result, of providing something of value.īy “why” means: What’s your purpose? What’s your cause? What’s your belief? Why does your organization exist? Why do you get out of the bed in the morning and why should anyone care? He points out that the reason can’t be to make a profit. But, very few know “WHY” they do what it is that they do. Simon Sinek points out that everyone in an organization knows “WHAT” it is that they do. 5 INSPIRING LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM SIMON SINEK 1. We all have the opportunity to learn from these lessons in leadership. To grow our leadership skills, it doesn’t matter what your role may be with in your organization. Sinek provides us inspiration to “START WITH WHY.” In his most recent TED talk, he authored “ Leaders Eat Last” which explains “ Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t.” This past March, Sinek did a TED Talk on “ Why good leaders make you feel safe.” This talk suggests that it’s someone who makes their team members feel secure and draws them into their circle to trust. The book explores, “How great leaders inspire everyone to take action.” This inspired me to write “ Start with Why – Create a Triangle of Trust Through Transparency.” It explains how you can use Sinek’s “Golden Circle” to build a Triangle of Trust for your company, organization or group. In 2011, Sinek released his book “START WITH WHY”. This discovery was the uncovering of a pattern in which all the great leaders would think, act and communicate. Sinek made a discovery in 2005 that profoundly changed his view on how he thought the world worked and the way in which he operates in it. In each situation, they seem to defy all the odds and prevail with their cause. as well as the Wright brothers being the first to achieve powered-man flight. Sinek provides examples from the success of Apple Inc., the movement started by Dr. How do you explain why others are able to achieve things that seem to defy all the assumptions? That’s the question Simon Sinek set out to explain in his 2009 TEDx Talk in Puget Sound, WA. This is an offline desktop app that DOES NOT track you and DOES NOT send your data to remote servers.
Not a fan of sugar? They'll set up dry tasting. But you can probably narrow down what kind of flight you would want to try if you know what kind of drinks you like: do you have a sweet tooth? Are you more of a dirty martini kind of person? If you like sweet drinks, tell your server that. But Alexis, isn't the point of going to a winery to experience new wines? Well, yes. If you haven't ever been to a winery, and the most experience you have drinking it is at parties or Grandma's for holiday dinner, you should start your wine journey by figuring out what kind of wine you *might* gravitate to. Figure out what kind of wine drinker you might be. Part I of IV: advice for when you first start going out to wineries.ġ. This is also the time when there are so many desserts that are so yummy. You get to have a wonderful home-cooked meal and gather around the table with friends and family. You get to fill up and eat more than you ever had. Laughter is in the air, and so is a good time. You create more memories as you reminisce on the old ones. The conversations are always funny and entertaining. Nothing honestly beats spending quality time with your family and friends. Then to put it under the tree makes it even more beautiful. Wrapping it up and putting a pretty bow on top is so pleasing. There is something about putting together a gift. My favorite is Home Alone and the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. I enjoy wrapping up on the couch with tons of blankets and watching a good Christmas movie. I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas, Chanukah, December, etc. As Christmas comes around next year and the following years, I will be more understanding and more thoughtful to how other people celebrate and do not celebrate around Christmas time. To remember this wonder, Chanukah was created.Christmas is not all that different across the religions who do celebrate the holiday. Even with a little bit of olive oil, the menorah was still lit and stayed lit for eight days. The Jewish reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and as a symbol of reclaiming the temple, the menorah was to be lit however, only a single cruse of olive oil was left. Chanukah memorializes the small army of Jews that defeated the mighty Greek Army in the second century BCE. Chanukah is an eight-day festival of lights that is celebrated by a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, and foods (fried). The Jewish do not celebrate Christmas, but instead, celebrate a holiday know as Chanukah (Hanukkah). The stuff that we complain about that makes us fat is probably exactly the stuff we want. We appreciate the names: Michael, Kate, Louis. Boots/ BootiesĪ girl can never have enough of those either - Christmas is a great excuse for another pair! 12. Thank you for creating these characters that made me laugh and that I could always relate to- despite the situation. Despite what people may say, Sandy always showed me that it was OK to play with the boys as a kid and that you’re stronger than you may think. Last but certainly not least, thank you for creating Sandy Cheeks- the karate chopping, spitfire Squirrel. Squidward is known to be grumpy sometimes but shows us to always do the things you love, even if you’re not that good at it, such as playing the clarinet. Nobody could disregard Squidward Tentacles (occasionally known as Tennisballs or Tortellini). Krabs, who is known to be stingy and would do anything for a nickel, but also demonstrates dedication to his keeping his legacy under wraps, the Krabby patty secret formula. Patrick always showed me that being loyal to your friends is very important. I can relate to his Krabby patty food cravings (who wouldn’t? They look delicious-even if they aren’t real) and his occasional flashes of brilliance. Then there was Spongebob's beloved sidekick, Patrick Star, the dim-witted, best friend, and partner in crime. Spongebob Squarepants, the bubbly and wholehearted sponge that he is- he has and always will be naïve to the world around him, but he always keeps a smiling face despite any situation. Thank you for creating characters that I continue to find myself identifying with and that are always teaching me new lessons. |
